Sub-Issue Detail for: Courses Of Instruction Or Training

Course of instruction or training:

The issue of attending a course of instruction or training raises the question of availability for work where the claimant was not referred to the course or training by a government agency. For guidance on this issue, see chapter 10 of the Digest.

To assist claimants in becoming re-employed, the Commission may refer them to a course of instruction or training. Claimants referred to a course or program of instruction are deemed to be available for work. Particular rules govern referrals and guidance details are provided at chapter 19 of the Digest dealing with Employment Benefits and Support Measures (Part II of the EI Act).

Selected decisions under this main issue relate to attendance with or without referral to a course of instruction or training.
